How was it Started?
The trend of the Panagbenga Festival of Baguio City started from the idea of other festivals of the cities or the towns in the Philippines. However, Baguio did not start as the town during the colonial period of Spanish. The city was created by Americans on their occupation of the Philippines and had a defender with a feast day.
The anniversary of this day is on September 1, which comes just right in the middle of the rainy season of the country. However, the rainy season which doesn’t allow for any parades and different activities. These are the highlights of this colorful festival.

Idea of Panagbenga Festival
Atty.Damaso E. Bangaoet, Jr., gave the idea of this festival in 1995 to the JPDC. They readily accepted the proposal of having the festival during the season of February.
The Atty. asked the question that why he decided the month of February? He just answered that the weather looks perfect in February. Moreover, the people can visit the country during the time of Christmas and the Holy Week.
The idea of this festival was sending to different societies and communities of Baguio. However, it was accepted whole heartily by everyone.
The identity of this festival was created, and a slogan was chosen from the large numbers of logos that have been set up by the students of all levels. The logo by Trisha Tabangin was chosen- the spray of white flowers.
The anthem of this festival was created by the professor (Macrio Fronda) from the University of (SLU) Saint Louis University. All the students learned this incredible anthem. The great mesmerizing music pennon in the air during the festival of flowers and parades.
The main events of this festival remain the same like the dancing in the street, floats parade, great band competitions, Market encounter and of course much more.
In this beautiful event, many other events have been lent with the civil organizations run (Private holding) and many other funding activities.
However, in the starting, the Panagbenga festival was of 10 days with some celebrations in it. Then it extended to two weeks. After its great popularity, it extended to 3 weeks, then 4 weeks. The first week being celebrated as the launching ceremonies, the next after first as session road in bloom and the last was reserved for the parade celebrations.
For taking the full advantage of the beautiful month February, the period as extended to the whole month. The time in which Valentine’s Days also encountered. But now this grand festival celebrates for 5 weeks. Isn’t amazing!!
The few years of the creation of this festival, the BFFF (Baguio Flower Festival Foundation) was coordinated to manage the Panagbenga festival.
No doubt that Panagbenga has always got a big media coverage just because of its great popularity. It is enjoyed for many years. The visitors can see the great strength of communities during this festival. A glimpse of fiery spirit in the clod city of Philippines.
